Short summary - last update November 13th, 2018

The construction sector has become one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and the transport phase for building logistic lasting for entire construction activities is overlooked in many projects. In my project , I want to:

  1. Choose cities and municipalities in China as my target system.
  2. Analyse their data that refer to life cycle assessment and material flow.
  3. Focus on two green Swedish construction projects (and maybe even more.
  4. Map the solutions and adjust the solutions to suitable for Chinese situation.
  5. Work out a practical greener building logistic program in China.
May I invite you to share your knowledge, and provide inspiration and feedback. In the yellow window the most prominent research topics are listed. All topics have a seperate DISQUS-box beneath, where you can post your questions and comments.

Looking forward to collaborate!

The construction sector has become one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. During all the processes of construction projects, transporting building materials, by-products and wastes is a process which has great potential to emit large amount of greenhouse gas and leads to global warming.

However, most efforts made to control emissions of construction projects are focused on the actual construct phase, such as construction methods, green material choices and better waste management. The transport phase lasting for entire construction activities is overlooked in many projects.

Choose the target system: Chinese cities

Since the construction industry in China is booming rapidly recent years and has the potential to cause global warming effect (and I come from China), I want to choose the residential building system as my target system.

Considering the possibility to gather current data and build the framework for greener building logistic after my study, I decide to focus on the capital cities of 23 provinces and 4 municipalities in China, which have relatively better economy, technology support and policy support, as my detailed targeted cities.

Analyze the current problems in Chinese cities

Based on the life cycle assessment, the raw material preparation, construction and demolition phases of the project are related to building logistic. By using the material flow analysis of typical projects in each targeted city and data collected in literature/report review, I want to work out a estimation of greenhouse emissions caused by building logistic in targeted cities and map the emission amount with the temperature increase.

As a result, the obvious potential temperature rise caused by building logistic may draw more people’s attention to really consider it as another major problem.

Study successful cases to find possible solutions

The Hammarby Sjöstad project and the Royal Seaport project in Stockholm, Sweden are two leading sustainable development projects around the world. The build logistic center in the projects have been proved to be successful attempt to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions. By analyzing the specific attempts in these two cases and making a material flow conceptual map of the projects, I want to draw the conclusion why the building logistics in these two projects are more sustainable compared with projects in China and make a list of green solutions in two Swedish cases.

By the literature review of more successful cases (maybe 4-6 other cases), I want to further elaborate the list of green solutions.

Map the solutions with Chinese practical situations

Firstly, analyze each solution and its required technology, policy, budget and so on. Secondly, compare the requirements with Chinese situations. Finally, adjust the solutions to make it possible to be applied in China.

In the final step of my project, I hope to work out a detailed plan of a practical greener building logistic program in China. Hopefully the conclusion can also be a reference for other similar developing countries to cope with global warming.

Help find Chinese data

I would like to concentrate on an analysis of the average carbon dioxide emissions caused by construction logistics in major cities of China. The biggest challenge for my project is the data collection phase. I need to find typical construction projects in different cities in China and collect their carbon dioxide emission data. I think that is a lot of work and maybe I can get help from the crowd engineering process.

Identify and elaborate green solutions

The Hammarby Sjöstad project and the Royal Seaport project in Stockholm, Sweden are two leading sustainable development projects around the world. I want to map the characteristics and qualities of these projects and see how they could be applied in China. By studying more successful cases (maybe 4-6), I want to further elaborate the list of green solutions. I hope you can help me indentifying these useful examples.

Convert CO2 emissions to temperature rise

By using the material flow data analysis of specific projects in each targeted city, I want to work out an estimation of greenhouse emissions caused by building logistic in these cities and map the emission amount with the temperature increase. As a result, the obvious potential temperature rise caused by building logistic may draw people’s attention to really consider it as another major problem.

I hope people can help me converting emissions to temperature rise in a reliable way.

Use Mendeley

Elsevier's Mendeley is a nice tool to store and share relevant articles, data sets and of course opinions. For this project we'll create a new map here.
