New correspondent: Luyao Yuan from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

Today our team was joined by a new ambassador, this time from Sweden. Her name is Luyao Yuan,  a second year master student in the program of Sustainable Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Luyao hopes to know more about sustainability from a broad perspective and to learn environmental improvement from both technical and strategic ways.  She’s also motivated to help unroll our initiative. This means: help us find suitable subjects to be featured in her country. But first we asked her to answer some questions.

Luyao, can you introduce yourself?

I’m Luyao, a second year master student in the program of Sustainable Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The program covers a wide range of
industries and interdisciplinary subjects related to industrial ecology.

What motivated you to choose for the study that you’re doing?

I’ve always had an interest in environmental protection and sustainable development. I got my bachelor’s degree in energy engineering, which mainly focused on how to improve efficiency or to reduce emissions of power plants. However, I hope to know more about sustainability from a broad perspective and to learn environmental improvement from both technical and strategic ways. Then the master’s program of Sustainable Technology at KTH became my best choice. During my graduate study, I have taken courses in environmental management as well as technologies, and learned analytical tools such as life cycle assessment, material and energy flow accounting.

What are your ambitions? How would you like to develop your future career?

My ambition is to get more holistic view and deep understanding of sustainability in multiple industries, and to be able to address relevant issues to promote sustainable development. I would like to work as a consultant in environmental or energy fields.

Do you see any consequences from climate change in your region? If yes, can you give an example?

Sweden is a country where sustainability are emphasized a lot. However, we can still see the results from climate change here. Sweden locates by the Baltic sea, of which temperature rises in the past decades due to global warming. The rise of sea level affects ice cover, precipitation, winds, etc., and it may also cause disappearance of marine species.

What do you consider is a strong quality of the Cool Down The Planet formula?

”Cool Down The Planet” is an amazing platform to gather people all over the world to address climate change. There is no limitations or borders for candidates to submit their innovative ideas. Everyone could be the one who changes the world and saves our earth. Meanwhile, dealing with climate change needs cooperation between all stakeholders. The platform provides a great opportunity to promote such collaboration and integration.
